Navigating the ins and outs of a job contract can feel like wading through murky waters, especially when you’re still getting adjusted to a new career. Lena's teaching journey began with a one-day-a-week contract at a local school. Excited to embark on her career, she eagerly took on the role, ready to inspire young minds. But as weeks went by, Lena found herself being asked to cover more classes, extending her time at the school without any adjustments to her pay.

Frustrated by the growing gap between her workload and her compensation, Lena reached out to TPAA for guidance. She was paired with one of our experienced case managers who thoroughly reviewed her contract and enterprise agreement.

They found that there were no clear rules about extra hours and compensation for additional duties. Armed with this insight, Lena's case manager engaged in discussions with the school's principal.

Eventually, a fair agreement was reached. Lena would now be compensated not just for teaching hours but also for in-between times and a morning break. This adjustment meant an extra $350 per week for Lena, along with ~$1,000 for the extra hours she'd already worked.
